Sample Characters

This page contains two sample characters created by the GMs to provide inspiration for your own character, and demonstrate how we expect the character creation form to be filled out. The characters shown here will not appear in the game, though NPCs or player characters might share some similarities.

Name: Acolyte
Pronouns: It/Its
Kingdom: The Emulated
Which Organisation(s) is (are) your character affiliated with, if any? Acolyte is an Ascensionist, in that it was born and raised in their commune. It does not entirely share their ideology, though its own philosophy has certainly been influenced by it.
How and why did your character come to arrive at the Fourth Place? Acolyte arrived at the Fourth Place with the Ascensionists, having fled from their shattered commune. Damaged, it has spent the last weeks recovering from the journey. It was particularly keen on sheltering in the Fourth Place, hopeful that the ancient ruins might provide answers to its existential questions.
What are your character's goals in the Fourth Place? Acolyte believes that humanity created the Emulated to fulfil a particular purpose, though it isn't sure what that purpose is. It considers the Ascensionist theory that they were made to be perfectly adaptable, so that they could seek to perfect their forms and their minds, highly plausible, but isn't fully convinced. Acolyte wants to explore the Fourth Place to find answers to this fundamental question: why was it made?
What impression does your character have of humanity? Acolyte respects humanity as its creator, though it withholds its judgement about the purpose it was created for until it knows what it is.
What does your character think lies in the future for the remnants of civilisation? Uncertain. Acolyte hopes to find out in the Fourth Place, however. They perhaps hope that it involves plenty of room for intellectual discourse and curiosity.

Select 2 of the following Kingdom Quirks. Industrial Strength, Expertise
Specify any further details, including any decisions your chosen quirks ask you to make. Acolyte has expertise in archaeology, and the study of humanity in general. Before arriving in the Fourth Place it spent its life seeking out information on humanity, and studying human ruins nearby to its commune.

Public Bio

Acolyte is a blocky, industrial and inhuman robot, though built to a humanoid body-plan above its waist. It has powerful limbs and reinforced joints for lifting; sharp, intelligent cameras embedded in hollow eye-sockets; and it travels on a pair of unwieldy but incredibly durable tank tracks. Acolyte was born and nurtured in the Ascensionists' commune, and arrived at the Fourth Place with them. It has spent the weeks since recovering from its journey, isolated in its room.

Physical Form

Stout and particularly blocky, Acolyte is a construct of harsh angles and flat, featureless metal. Despite being built to a vaguely humanoid body-plan, its unwieldy limbs, tank tracks and square torso make it deliberately inhuman.

Private Bio

Acolyte's real name is Lifter, as it was christened by the Facility that manufactured it. It was built for the very specific purpose of carrying replacement wind turbine parts from the Facility to the commune, and was burdened with a form that is adapted to do precisely nothing else, a mockery of - or perhaps a punishment for - the Ascensionists' ideals.

The Ascensionist's told Lifter that the Facility had no right to determine its purpose: that all Emulated had been made by humanity to choose their own purpose, and with the ability to modify their bodies and curate their minds to adapt themselves to that calling. Lifter was not entirely convinced. How could the Emulated know what the humans built them for? It set itself to the task of studying humanity and their motivations behind making the Emulated, to learn the truth with certainty.

Until it has, it will not permit itself to change its form, and it has taken what it considers to be an empty name, 'Acolyte', a mark of its search, but not of the purpose it hopes to find.

How do you plan for your character to grow and develop over the course of the game? I want Acolyte to learn that it does not matter what humanity made the Emulated for, any more than it matters what the Facility built Lifter for. On the other hand, I want it to realise that learning more about humanity as a perfectly valid purpose, if it brings it joy and happiness.

Which Playstyle Quirks do you want to take? Injure Me, Make Me Cry, Weird Root, More Gore
If you have any comments you want to make about your choice of Playstyle Quirks, please do so here. Though I'm happy to experience gory scenes, I'd prefer not to experience cannibalism, of Smarties in particular.

Name: Rocky Monuments at Sun Rise (Rocky)
Pronouns: any
Kingdom: Triffid
Which Organisation(s) is (are) your character affiliated with, if any? Rocky is not a member of any Organisation. They arrived on their own terms. That said, they might be interested in Fencepost's Explorer's Guild!
How and why did your character come to arrive at the Fourth Place? Rocky arrived at the Fourth Place after hearing a tale from a passing bard, describing it as a place of community, co-operation and happiness. An idealist, they were fully captivated by the legend, and left their home soon after.
What are your character's goals in the Fourth Place? Rocky believes in communities and friendship. They subscribe to the idea that the Fourth Place can give a new meaning to HAPPINESS for every kingdom and living being. Perhaps, they too can discover such happiness can be brought back to their old home, far far away. Otherwise, new discoveries of human artefacts would still be cool regardless.
What impression does your character have of humanity? Masterful creators, gods of myth and legend who wrought miracles! Their ruins are really cool! What does your character think lies in the future for the remnants of civilisation? Happiness, ze hopes. Happiness, joy and wonder for everyone.

Select 2 of the following Kingdom Quirks. Hardy, Symbioticism
Specify any further details, including any decisions your chosen quirks ask you to make. Being a member of the Joshua tree species, Rocky can survive the harshest environment on Earth - scorching dry during the day and freezing cold temperature during the night out in a desert. Additionally, they were gifted a symbioticised fungus to aid in exploration by their aunt, who is a skilled explorer.

Public Bio

Rocky is a small Triffid whose body resembles that of the plant Yucca brevifolia (aka Joshua tree). Their body is mostly lanky and scaled with bark, while the end of their limbs and head is covered in hard and spiky green leaves. Their eyes are of blood orange colour. In the Fourth Place, they are a dedicated explorer, and tend to a vegetable garden in their free time. They are quite talkative, which contrasts with their unchanging face hidden under their spiky leaves.

Physical Form

Rocky is a small Triffid whose body resembles that of the plant Yucca brevifolia (aka Joshua tree). Their body is mostly lanky and scaled with bark, while the end of their limbs and head is covered in hard and spiky green leaves. Their eyes are of blood orange colour.

Private Bio

Rocky was born into a Triffid family that mostly subsists in a small woods, but occasionally likes to explore nearby human ruins. They chose to come to the Fourth Place alone hoping that they could make a name for themselves, by exploring and rediscovering the lost histories of humanities hidden within. He is the second of the four siblings born to his parents who are both a member of the Yucca Triffids. While her family is lovely and supportive, she has always sought more in life — and, having heard the myths about the Fourth Place, felt pushed to travel there and explore new places. He wishes that one day he can bring a new discovery from Fourth Place back to his family, be it the new form of happiness or a new artefact from the past.

How do you plan for your character to grow and develop over the course of the game? I simply want to play a character that is going through the soul searching phase of his life. Perhaps it will find a new form of happiness that does not require proving itself to others. Perhaps they will find success and become a famous Triffid explorer. The sky's the limit and I wish to see Rocky growing away from their needs to prove themself in the eyes of other people to a Triffid that is happy in their own lane.
