Inheritors

The Inheritors are a motley union of people who believe that the great minds of Humanity were quite intentional in creating their successors. More accurately called Inheritorialism, these disconnected groups have all independently derived a similar ideology from the ruins of the world around them: that something great, here, once existed, and it must therefore be their duty to restore it. ‘Inheritorialism’ is a generic term referring to all of these groups - some call themselves the ‘Civilised’, the ‘Roadbuilders’, the ‘Posthumous’ - although the organisation that moves in the spaces around the Fourth Place call themselves the Inheritors, specifically.

Inheritors are usually of the intuition that a global society, as it existed prior to the end of Humankind, was a broadly good thing, and that a great deal has been lost in the wake of its demise; and they work their best to restore and renew it, albeit in a fashion that more benefits the beings that now occupy the world. Most Inheritors agree that whatever caused the death of all of the Humans was unlikely to have been what they meant to do, and, in some last-ditch effort to preserve their culture, they created the beings that currently occupy the world in their stead. They view Humanity as the father of the life that persists, and deplore those who would imply that the world is better now than it once was — of course there were squabbles, but what has occurred can be called no less than an apocalypse. Those who remain to Inherit can only work to rebuild. It is, of course, what they owe to Humanity.

The Inheritors do not have any unique knowledge about Humanity that differentiates them from other organisations; and are quite willing to share their microsocieties with people who are not Inheritors — although it is rare to find any kind of anti-hominist belief in a settlement primarily run and occupied by Inheritors. Inheritors do not consider their organisation to be religious, and are rarely spiritually inclined otherwise.

The Inheritors that occupy the Fourth Place coagulated from several smaller Inheritorial settlements when it became clear that it looked to become a larger settlement — a city — occupied by many, many people, in the near-enough future. They hold some significant sway over the Fourth Place by nature of them being naturally proactive and intentional towards the construction of a functional society (they don’t like it when you call it a ‘commune’.) Inheritors occupy many manual roles, and attempt to maintain the more technical workings of the Fourth Place, to mixed success.

Their intent is to render the Fourth Place a functional, permanent city, as it surely once was for Humanity.
