The Inhabitants

“Young or old, night or day, all are welcome here at the Fourth Place Hotel!”

— Signage beside the Hotel's main entrance, translated by Violin.

Since the disappearance of humans, the modern world is home to a variety of species belonging to different biological and mechanical Kingdoms, which all display sapience and intelligence comparable to humans. Each Kingdom exists throughout the world, though some social groups may be limited to just one Kingdom. The Fourth Place uniquely allows the blending of skills and ideas within a relatively advanced, if chaotic, new sprouting of society.

Each Kingdom has a unique selection of traits and quirks, which furnish them with advantages and disadvantages for exploring the Fourth Place. Please consult this page for more information.

The best memory of human creations comes from the Emulated, fashioned with silicon chips which replicate a human mind, as the peak of their technology. They exist as modular bodies not limited by biology, and can therefore utilise many tools and mechanical parts left over from human civilisation, though they may never stray too far from a power source.

The Myconids' links to the anthropogenic world are not well-known, as they prefer to communicate via their own mycelial network, which hosts a vast web of information curated over centuries, detailing everything from the weather to archaeological finds. Though Myconids prefer to live together in the shade, many have diverse locomotory appendages, and can move and communicate freely with other species.

A centipedal Oystercap, stern and overseeing. A Cortinarian hood-walker, making sure its books are all in order.

The eldest birds and beasts speak of companionship with the humans, as a memory of affection passed down through generations, while others know only of a life spent scavenging among scraps. The Smarties are the animals who once lived among humanity, as pets, pests, livestock, or victims of anthropogenic development, who have now developed sapience.

A gruff Harbor Seal and a miniscule Common Toad, journeying together in mutual amphibianism. A gaudy indigo-dyed owl, watchful and resplendent.

Most agree that the Triffids of today are distant relatives of the sessile grasses and shrubs which grow sparingly across the dry Earth surrounding the Fourth Place, yet those ancestral flora from the Triffid tales, grown in rows and fed by humans, no longer exist. Triffids have now evolved to move, think and speak, with a culture built around growth and beauty.
